The Federation was formed in June 2002 in Montreal, Canada during the Hellenic Medical Society of New York (HMS NY) biennial international educational conference at which time Dr. Spyros Mezitis was the President of HMS NY and was elected President of the Federation of Hellenic Medical Societies of North America. Initial members included Hellenic medical societies of New York, Boston, Chicago, California, Toronto, and Montreal. During the annual Scholarship weekends of the Hellenic Medical Society of New York, Federation conferences had been arranged. In 2004 with the assistance of Dr. George Dangas, the immediate Past-President of HMS NY, a meeting in New York City on Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes was sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry to support the Federation and all Federation representatives attended. The Founding of the Global Hellenic Medical Network on the island of Kos in 2007 and the 2008 global Hellenic medical conference in Cyprus were co-sponsored by the Federation. Furthermore in December 2008 during the Scientific Symposium of the HMS NY, the first Federation Scholarship was awarded to a medical student at Drexel University in Philadelphia. With the strong support of HMS NY President Dr. George Tsioulias, the Federation was reinvigorated in 2008. Immediate goals included physician networking through the establishment of a Website, and the co-sponsoring of the Third Global Medical and Biomedical Conference at the Grand Resort, Lagonissi in Athens, Greece September 3-5, 2009. In the summer of 2010, the Federation sponsored the conference of the Global Hellenic Medical Network at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. In collaboration with HMS NY Presidents Dr. Nicholas Mezitis, 2010-2014 and Dr. George Liakeas 2014-2018, the Federation co-sponsored the annual Dr. Papanicolaou Symposia at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Since 2018, Dr. Spyros Mezitis and HMS NY President Dr. Panos Manolas have worked closely together in establishing a technology platform to unify the Greek Diaspora. We encourage the strengthening of the current Hellenic medical societies in the Americas and the formation of new Hellenic medical societies. The Executive Board includes all Presidents or assigned representatives of the existing Hellenic Medical Societies of North America and this non-profit organization has a constitution and bylaws registered in the state of Delaware. As current President, I welcome all ideas to strengthen the Federation by increasing networking, scholarship donations, collaboration among Hellenic medical societies, and interaction with national and international medical/health organizations.
